This is something I posted to my facebook page just now.
I’m posting this because it might be of interest to you, the reader. I also think it’s a shame that we can’t share opinions in the modern world. If we continue to divide ourselves based on what we believe, we will continue to divide ourselves down to the individual level. This is no way to form a functioning society. We must be able to work together to make the world a better place.
I’m only posting this now because I just wrote it, but I’ll post another one on Jordan B Peterson in due time. I also like to create book synopses where I read the book and then create a post, summarizing all the useful information it contains into just 1 blog post per paragraph.
Anywho, we’ll see if that ever happens:
——————-
There was a man named Socrates, born around 470 BC. He is considered one of the founders of western philosophy. There is no doubt in my mind that we owe a great debt to Socrates and the work he performed throughout his life.
What does he do, you may ask? Well he asked a question. Lots of questions. From Wikipedia:
“Perhaps his most important contribution to Western thought was his dialectical method of inquiry, known as the Socratic method or “elenchus” method, which he applied largely to the examination of key moral concepts such as Goodness and Justice.” “The dialectical method is a discourse between two or more people who have different points of view on a subject but want to establish the truth through reasonable arguments.” “Socrates favored truth as the highest value, proposing that truth could be discovered through reason and logic in discussion”
In fact, Socrates revealed so much through his questions that it began to irritate people. This upset many people, so a jury consisting of his own peers voted to execute him. This time from Time magazine:
“tried for impiety and corrupting the youth of Athens. At the time, Socrates was a controversial figure in the city and not very well liked. He challenged anyone’s thinking through endless and circuitous Socratic dialogue, and he openly questioned the gods the Athenians worshiped at the time… …Socrates was allegedly able to flee Athens after he was found guilty by an Athenian jury. Instead, he chose to stick to principles. He would follow the law and apparently not even try to convince the jury of his innocence. Socrates carried out his own execution by drinking poison hemlock.”
Now that’s a man of faith.
I would never dare compare myself with Socrates, but I try to adhere to his principles. I fight for the truth because through the truth we learn more about what is right and wrong and how best to behave and direct ourselves in life.
So, I will continue to share my opinions freely. I’m not going to shut up just because some people don’t like what I have to say. I’m more than willing to discuss things if you want, who knows, you might change your mind.
Otherwise, If you prefer not to see what I have to say then you are welcome to unfollow me.
Thanks for reading and have a nice day :)
Cheers,
Tyson
